The Delicious Monster: Hvar's Most-Ordered Sandwich
Grilled mortadella, fresh mozzarella, basil pesto and arugula on toasted sourdough. How our most popular sandwich became a Marigo signature on the Hvar Riva.
Every restaurant on Hvar has a dish that people photograph before they eat it. Ours is the Delicious Monster sandwich, and it has been since the first week we put it on the menu.
What's in it
Grilled mortadella, fresh mozzarella, basil pesto, arugula, cherry tomato, a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil, and a finish of aceto glaze. The bread is toasted hard enough to hold it all together, soft enough that you don't need to unhinge your jaw. The name was a joke that stuck.
Why it works
Mortadella divides people until it's grilled. The heat does something to the fat: it renders slightly, the edges crisp, the flavour deepens. Paired with cold mozzarella and bitter arugula, the contrast is what makes it. Most sandwiches are about bread. This one is about what's inside.
A breakfast sandwich that isn't just breakfast
We serve it from 08:00 through to late afternoon as part of our all-day menu. It's listed under breakfast because that's when most people order it, but it works at any hour. Best eaten outside, facing the sea, with a cold juice or a coffee depending on which side of noon you're on.

Marigo Grill and Chill sits on the old Riva in Hvar Town. If you want to explore the island after your meal, we also have two private speedboats available for daily rental - perfect for island hopping or a beach day on the Pakleni Islands.
